Social media platforms are becoming somewhat of a common commodity. Okay, not even somewhat - social media platforms and profiles alike are becoming a major part of society. All the way from our favorite actors and actresses, down to the best basketball player in the world, just about everybody has their toes dipped into the social media pool. In doing so, it also means that a lot of people are hopping on the Instagram train, which is completely fine; given that you understand what you're getting into. Instagram isn't just your typical social media application, it's developed into something much more than that. In the beginning, it was just a way to show your friends what you've been up to in the form of a picture post; but now there are "meme pages" selling shout outs for $50 a piece. The game has changed, and it seems like 2017 is going to be a year for Instagram to truly flourish (that is, if it isn't already doing so).

Instagram isn't just a personal platform anymore, but something that businesses and entrepreneurs can turn to for their marketing needs. Marketing on Instagram is an entire industry now, and the results that you can get out of it are quite immaculate. Instagram is clearly the winner for "go-to" social media application of 2017, and this article is going to talk about why.

How to Avoid Spam Accounts on Instagram

Seeing your Instagram followers rise in numbers due to your continuous effort is an incredibly rewarding prospect. It reinforces that your marketing strategy is sound, and even better, that people genuinely want to follow you. However, when closely inspecting some of these followers, it's likely that you will find profiles that would be deemed as spam. These accounts are completely fake profiles that will continuously request that you like their photos or will try and post clickbait comments on your own photos. Not only is this a great annoyance to you, but it degrades your whole profile's look and professionalism.

Instagram periodically does a network-wide purge, which eliminates a significant portion of these spam accounts. These purges are done fairly infrequently, but you don't want to wait for them to clean up, so it's advisable that you proactively try and reduce the amount of spam accounts that interact with you.The general trend seems to be that the more followers an account has, the higher proportion of those will be spam accounts. Many celebrities and large organization Instagram accounts lost millions of followers in 2014 when the network did its first major cleanse.

The Exciting Story Of Instagram

The story of how Instagram started is quite a short one, but an interesting one nevertheless. Instagram was still in its infancy when it was purchased by the social media behemoth that is Facebook. An app that had existed for just 551 days, and had made absolutely no revenue, sold for $1 billion. How exactly did the 28-year-old company founder, Kevin Systrom, manage to pull off this feat?

In the beginning of January 2009, Systrom, who had no formal computer science education, started to put time and energy into teaching himself to be able to code. It was around about this time that Foursquare was beginning to become popular, which resulted in the increased interest of location check-in apps. Although Systrom had a few concepts developed for these type of apps, in late 2009 he started to pour all of his attention into a single up. This app combined many elements of things that were popular at the time, including Foursquare.

"I figured I could build a prototype of the idea in HTML5 and get it to some friends," Systrom said, in an interview. "Those friends ended up using the prototype without any branding elements or design at all."

Fake vs. Real Instagram Followers

There are a lot of things to worry about on Instagram and other social media platforms, on of those main concerns being real versus fake followers. Figuring out whether you're marketing to fake or real followers can be a big deal, as it's going to determine whether your efforts are in vain (or not). In some cases, boosting your follower count with some fakes is a great idea; but we'll get into that a bit further down in this piece. First off, let's talk about the main difference between a real and fake follower – this information could help you spit fakes from a mile away.

Real vs. Fakes
In order to point out the difference, just using social media platforms (like Instagram) will expose you to the wonderful world of fake followers. Real people are going to be much more appreciative than fake accounts, as most of them are just looking to do some marketing of their own. There are a few telltale signs in regards to a fake follower, and they are pretty obvious. Once you've been taught to search them out, there's pretty much no way for you to get them mixed up!

Profiles – If the profile you're looking at doesn't sport any pictures, or simply has pictures with obvious links on them, odds are they're a marketing account (and thus, a fake follower). These fake accounts don't have profiles that are filled out, and when they are filled out, it's usually with random words (or something that has to do with a hot woman looking for a date). Don't get suckered in and start to think that these are legitimate followers!

Follower Count – Most fake accounts are going to have little to no following at all, as they aren't really a part of the Instagram community. If you want to make the most out of your Instagram efforts, you'll need to decipher which accounts you should be caring about.

If you don't know what those are, you're in luck; I'm about to explain the entire situation in great detail (so get ready to read along!).

The only way to better your business, is through the use of better marketing platforms. In order to target the right people, you've got to be aware of who it is you're targeting in the first place.
